The Lo-Fi Hymnal II

by Tyler James Cook

/
1.
From Hymnary.org: 1 I am coming to the cross; I am poor and weak and blind; I am counting all but dross; I shall full salvation find. Refrain: I am trusting, Lord, in Thee, Blest Lamb of Calvary; Humbly at Thy cross I bow; Save me, Jesus, save me now. 2 Long my heart has sighed for Thee; Long as evil reigned within; Jesus sweetly speaks to me-- "I will cleanse you from all sin." (Refrain) 3 Here I give my all to Thee, Friends and time, and earthly store; Soul and body Thine to be, Wholly Thine forevermore. (Refrain) 4 In the promises I trust; Now I feel the blood applied; I am prostrate in the dust; I with Christ am crucified. (Refrain) 5 Jesus comes! He fills my soul! Perfected in Him I am; I am every whit made whole: Glory, glory to the Lamb! (Refrain)
2.
1 We praise thee, O God, for the Son of thy love, for Jesus who died, and is now gone above. Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory, hallelujah! Amen! Hallelujah! Thine the glory, revive us again. 2 We praise thee, O God, for thy Spirit of light who has shown us our Savior and scattered our night. [Refrain] 3 We praise thee, O God, for the joy thou hast giv’n to thy saints in communion, these foretastes of heav’n. [Refrain] 4 Revive us again, fill each heart with thy love. May each soul be rekindled with fire from above. [Refrain]
3.
1. Come, women, wide proclaim Life through your Savior slain; Sing evermore. Christ, God’s effulgence bright, Christ, who arose in might, Christ, who crowns you with light, Praise and adore. 2. Come, clasping children’s hands, Sisters from many lands, Teach to adore. For the sin sick and worn, The weak and overborne, All who in darkness mourn, Pray, work, yet more. 3. Work with your courage high, Sing of the daybreak nigh, Your love outpour. Stars shall your brow adorn, Your heart leap with the morn, And, by His Love upborne, Hope and adore. 4. Then when the garnered field Shall to our Master yield A bounteous store, Christ, hope of all the meek, Christ, whom all the earth shall seek, Christ your reward shall speak, Joy evermore.
4.
1 My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; my gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. 2 I love thee because thou hast first loved me and purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree; I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. 3 I'll love thee in life, I will love thee in death, and praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath, and say when the deathdew lies cold on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. 4 In mansions of glory and endless delight, I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
5.
1 I hear the Savior say, "Thy strength indeed is small, Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all." Refrain: Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. 2 Lord, now indeed I find Thy pow'r and Thine alone, Can change the leper's spots And melt the heart of stone. [Refrain] 3 For nothing good have I Where-by Thy grace to claim; I'll wash my garments white In the blood of Calv'ry's Lamb. [Refrain] 4 And when, before the throne, I stand in Him complete, "Jesus died my soul to save," My lips shall still repeat. [Refrain]

about

A hasty surprise for Good Friday/Easter/Holy Week 2022, _The Lo-Fi Hymnal II_ consists of five quick recordings done right before the Sunday morning service at Southside Free Will Baptist Church on Sunday, 10 April 2022. Recorded using the Voice Memo app on an iPhone SE--often in a single, occasionally sloppy, take--these pieces include background chatter from congregants as they socialize and chit-chat before service. As such, _The Lo-Fi Hymnal II_ offers a lively sense of being at a small, Southern church right before service begins, as the amateur pianist warms up--mistakes and all!

Download includes two versions of the cover art, a photograph by the artist of the Catholic Church in Ritter (Catholic Hill), South Carolina, from 2019. Saint James the Greater Catholic Church is operated by the descendants of slaves, whose masters were Irish Catholic immigrants. Irish and African Catholics practiced their faith together in this parish, and the descendants of those slaves still maintain the church and their faith to this day--a rare example of a predominantly African-American Catholic church.

Download also includes a PDF of "The Joy of Hymnals," a blog post from 7 October 2019 at _The Portly Politico_:
